Scott Spiezio gets 3 years probation for DUI, hit-and-run

Former Cardinal Scott Spiezio was sentenced in a California courtroom this morning to three years probation after pleading guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and hit-and-run, according to court records.

The charges stem from a car crash Dec. 30 that occurred about 200 yards from Spiezio's luxury high-rise condo in Irvine, Calif.

Spiezio must also pay $390 in fines, attend an alcohol program, go to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, perform 80 hours of community service, and pay an undisclosed amount to a victim-witness emergency fund, according to records filed in Orange County Superior Court.

Charges of battery, assault, driving under the influence while blood is more than 0.08 percent alcohol and assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm were dismissed.

The Cardinals released Spiezio on Feb. 27 after he was charged in the case. The Cardinals have agreed to pay Spiezio's $2.4 million salary for this season plus a $100,000 buyout of next season's option. More >>

St. Louis Cardinals release Scott Spiezio after arrest warrant issued after driving under the influence (DUI) crash

An arrest warrant has been issued by the Irvine Police Department for Cardinals utilityman Scott Spiezio on six charges stemming from a crash in late December.

The warrant alleges driving under the influence, driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content of .08 percent or more, hit and run, aggravated assault, assault and battery.

This afternoon, the Cardinals released a statement saying, "The ballclub is immediately releasing player Scott Spiezio in response to a six-count arrest warrant issued for Spiezio today." More >>

St. Louis Cardinals infielder Scott Spiezio charged with DUI, hit-and-run and assault

Scott Spiezio, a St. Louis Cardinals infielder, was charged Tuesday with driving with a blood-alcohol level of 0.08 percent or more, hit and run with property damage, and aggravated assault and battery. Spiezio, 35, will face two years in prison if he is convicted, according to the District Attorney's office.

Police say Spiezio had several vodka drinks at a Newport Beach bar before leaving it at about 12:20 a.m. Dec. 30 in a 2004 BMW and attempting to drive home. Police are not yet releasing the name of the bar, said Lt. Rick Handfield of the Irvine Police Department.

Spiezio is also accused of speeding, cutting across lanes and through oncoming traffic lanes, driving over a curb and crashing into a fence at Campus Drive and Carlson. The front two tires of his car blew out when he allegedly hit the fence and knocked down a fence pole. He allegedly then fled on foot to his Irvine condo complex, near the scene of the accident, and visited a friend who lived in the same complex, Handfield said. More >>
